Kate Watt

Kate Watt’s journey into becoming a Yoshimoto Orton-Gillingham Master Trainer in Australia is based upon personal experiences and her passionate desire that all children leave school with strong literacy skills and a positive self-identity.

Kate is deeply aware of the challenges her husband faced at school as an undiagnosed dyslexic. The battle scars of a negative schooling experience can be deep and long lasting.

Kate and her husband are the proud parents of two amazing humans. They can both now see that their youngest child exhibited very distinct warning signs of dyslexia in kindergarten and year one. When Kate raised concerns with her son’s teachers, she was told, ‘he’s a boy’...‘he’ll catch on soon’... ‘there’s nothing to worry about.’ To this day, Kate is thankful that she ignored such advice, as her son was formally diagnosed with dyslexia and dysgraphia at the age of 7 and she is grateful that effective intervention began at this point. Kate strongly feels that dyslexia is a learning difference and only becomes a disability when children are not identified early or provided with appropriate teaching methods.

Since her son’s diagnosis in 2012, Kate has been continuing to educate herself as she knows that her tertiary qualifications did not teach her the Science of Reading or how to effectively teach ALL students how to read and spell. Kate’s innate drive is to raise awareness and recognition of dyslexia and what action needs to be happening in schools in order for such students to achieve their fullest potential.

In Ron Yoshimoto’s words…. ‘it’s all about the kids.’
